Module 12: Endurance & Health
The Athlete's Mindset
Trumpet playing breaks down muscle tissue (Orbicularis Oris). Improvement happens during the Recovery Phase, not the playing phase. If you never rest, you never rebuild.

The 50/50 Rule
Golden Rule: Rest as much as you play. If you play a 2-minute etude, rest for 2 minutes. This clears the lactic acid and allows blood (oxygen) to return to the muscles.
Tip: Put the trumpet DOWN. Do not hold it. Shake out your arms. Breathe.

The Red Ring of Death
Look in the mirror. Do you see a deep red ring or a 'cookie cutter' mark on your lips? This indicates excessive pressure. You are cutting off blood flow. Without blood, the muscle dies and goes numb.
Fix: Keep your facial corners firm (the 'M' setting) and support the air from your core so your embouchure resists the mouthpiece on its own. That lets you ease off and pull the horn away from your face — instead of just blowing harder on tired lips.

Warning Signs: Stop Immediately
- Sharp Pain: Not burn (burn is fatigue), but sharp pinching.
- Swelling: If you can't articulate or buzz low notes.
- Air Leaking: Muscles have failed.
If this happens, pack up. Ice your chops for 10 mins. Come back tomorrow.
