Module 28: Lead Playing
The Shallow Cup
Lead playing is not just playing high; it is playing with 'Cut'. To achieve this sizzle, we use smaller mouthpieces (e.g., Bobby Shew Lead, Schilke 14A4a). The shallow cup boosts high frequencies but makes the low register harder to control.

Driving the Bus
The Lead Trumpet is the drummer of the brass section. You are responsible for the Time.
Play on Top: You must articulate slightly ahead of the beat. Use sharp, aggressive accents to kick the band forward. If you drag, the band dies.

The Shake
A classic Big Band effect. It is a wide, unmetered trill used on long high notes for excitement. Shake the horn slightly with your right hand or use jaw vibrato. It should sound wild.

Pyramid Balance
The Rule of Balance: The Lead trumpet sets the dynamic and the style; the rest of the section balances slightly underneath it (if the lead plays forte, the section plays mezzo-forte). This lets the lead line cut through naturally while the section stays blended. Don't blast at ffff all night — you'll blow out your chops and bury the section. Support your Lead player!
